“Grockle” Named as Isle of Wight Word of 2013

Following the Oxford English Dictionarys announcement that selfie is Britains word of 2013, the Isle of Wight has released its own word defining 2013 on the Island.

Grockle, a derogatory term for a tourist, has topped the list of words that sum-up the year 2013 on the Isle of Wight.

Typical example of a grockle.

Close contenders for the title were twerk and garlic, making frequent appearances across Isle of Wight events this year.

Twerking took the Island by storm this summer with residents of all ages. Maude Mewfield is one fan of the butt-shaking dance popularised by singer Miley Cyrus.

“I love it, the movement, the freedom, the sheer lustiness of the repetitive horizontal motion,” said Maude aged 76.

Twerk lost out however, when it came to the top-spot. An annoyingly large influx of tourists this summer meant grockle claimed the title for itself.

Used in phrases or comments such as: “What the bloody hell are you doing around these parts you filthy grockle?” and “Get the hell out! This establishment is not for dirty grockles such as yourselves!” – The word Grockle epitomises the essence of Island life.
